In 1970, a young and depressed Winnipeg photographer accepted an assignment from the National Film Board of Canada to document the country’s youth culture. Gerry Kopelow hit the road armed with his camera and film and spent the summer “stalking,” as he puts it in the introduction, the denizens of outdoor music festivals and downtown protests from Winnipeg to Toronto.

The result is All Our Changes. Images from a Sixties generation.

a soul mate died today

a child

a friend

such loyalty I’ve never known

such unlimited compassion

such forgiveness

hardly sick a day in his life and then suddenly

he’s gone

put in the ground to return to dust

-kissing that lifeless form that I have

 held and cherished

protected and healed

it felt like a dream

terrible and true

only now

away from the eyes and tender hearts of my children

can I grieve

this precious connection oft taken for granted
