Not only is today the March equinox, but it is also the First Point of Aries, when the sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north. And while the zodiac does not play much part in modern astronomy, it did once. The role it still plays is capturing the imagination of people and providing an entry into skygazing and astronomy in general.
The Beauty of the Heavens (1842) by Charles F. Blunt is a book with over a hundred plates illustrating the science of astronomy. The book is clearly geared towards a popular audience, with an abundance of early lithographic illustrations, including the zodiac ones pictured here.
